This is the one. I have never in 41 years seen one in this condition. It has been in a vault for all these years and was serviced by Rolex with a complete overhaul and made over with only Rolex parts and only Rolex touching it. It has the best of everything. It is a 1016. There were 4 models of Explorers and my two favorites are the 6610 with a 1030 movement and a 1016 with a 1570 movement. To me the 5500 and 5504 are not true Explorers with the 19mm lug instead of the original 20mm lug. Some day the Explorer and the Sea Dwellers will be the most respected and looked for Rolexes out there. They were fewer in number and tested to unheard of standards. "The Explorer has become recognized the world over as the watch for climbers, cave explorers, skiers." The Explorer was guaranteed waterproof to 330 feet. It was machined from a solid block of Swedish stainless steel. First watch on Mt. Everest (although that's now in dispute). Withstood -53 degrees celsius and remained accurate. Rugged in the most extreme, adverse conditions. This watch is Rolex Explorer model 1016, bracelet 78360 (that is what it was born with folks), tight as the day it was new. Movement is 1570 which has 26 jewels. Correct numbers for movement which is a Hack movement. SN 3, 481,xxx or 1972. In a word "mint." You will not find one better anywhere in the world. It has documentation of service, Rolex box and original Explorer brochure. |
